Yoga Therapy

IMG_2177One of the most exciting developments in the last few years is the integration of Western science with ancient Eastern wisdom traditions like yoga.  In the past decade, research has clearly documented the efficacy of yoga for numerous conditions including arthritis, back pain, cancer, depression, fibromyalgia, heart disease, insomnia, MS, scoliosis, and pain management in general.  Yoga therapy is a personalized approach using the various practices of yoga to address these conditions while also considering the unique needs and personality of each individual.

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is typically conducted one-on-one or in small groups to develop a yoga program specific to each individual’s needs.  This allows the teacher or therapist to develop a personalized approach to treating the whole person, and not just the “symptom or disease”.  Various yoga practices are then integrated including gentle postures with props, breathing practices, imagery, relaxation, and meditation to calm and focus the mind.  Whether taught individually or in small groups, the focus is on relaxation and on linking movement to deep, rhythmic breathing.
