Yin Yoga is a complimentary practice to balance the effects of more muscular forms of Yang Yoga (ashtanga and power yoga) and exercise such as running, weight lifting, and other active sports. The practice of Yin Yoga encourages the slow and safe stimulation of deep connective tissue primarily through long held seated and floor postures that focus mostly on the hips, pelvis and lower spine. The stillness of these long held poses (3 minutes or more) cultivates a quiet, introspective physical and mental practice that focuses on awareness of the body’s sensations as well as balancing the flow of energy (chi or prana).
